Unfortunate Mishap Costs Ragan at Michigan
Brooklyn, Mich. (August 16, 2008)
David Ragan and the No. 6 Discount Tire team had a disappointing end to a promising weekend in the Carfax 250 at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday afternoon. After qualifying 11 th , Ragan looked to cap off the weekend with a solid run in Roush's back yard. But fighting an ill-handling race car all day proved to be tougher than expected for Ragan and the team. Ragan lost control of his Ford Fusion on lap 52 and backed it into the wall. The Discount Tire Ford Fusion was damaged beyond repair.
David Ragan and the No.6 Discount Tire Ford
Ragan and the Discount Tire team unloaded on Friday afternoon with a lot of confidence. Roush Fenway Racing has typically been stellar at Michigan and this weekend looked to be no different. Ragan ran in the top 10 in both practice sessions and started the race in the 11 th position. The problems started early for Ragan and the team. On lap 15 Ragan commented his Ford Fusion was tight under throttle on exit. The problems persisted and Ragan lost three spots by lap 30. Crew chief Mike Kelley told Ragan to stay focused and stay up on the wheel. Green-flag pit stops started on lap 42. Kelley called Ragan to the pit stall on lap 43 for major adjustments. Kelley ordered fuel, four tires, an air pressure adjustment and a track bar adjustment. Ragan exited the pit stall in the 17 th position. On lap 52 Ragan got extremely loose and backed his Ford Fusion into the wall in turn two. The damage was beyond repair.
"I was just overdriving it", said Ragan. "Our Discount Tire Ford Fusion wasn't really good from the get-go and just got really tight. We made a pretty big stab at it on our pit stop. It was pretty free and I was just overdriving it trying to be faster than what the car would go and just made a mistake and wrecked it."
The 36th -place finish leaves Ragan sixth in the Nationwide Series point standings. Ragan and the team will return to action next Friday, August 22 nd at Bristol.
